People, states and money in a changing world

The historical research project Money(-)Making Empire investigates long-term monetary development – from silver coins to notes – and monetisation in the Baltic Sea region during the early modern period. Using the Swedish Empire as a case study, it examines the issuance, use, and circulation of money as central components of empire- and state-building. It further explores how state monetary policies both shaped and were shaped by the practices, interests, and political participation of local powerholders and ordinary subjects.
